1126 am IST: logs on to blogger after accessing the net from my home adsl by BSNL.
1127: the power supply fails- the puter switches on to batteries, but did not konk off immediately as expected - by the way this is my good old win 98. i am trying to save whatever i am typing in every couple of minutes so that what i type in is not lost when the machine konks off.
1130 : BSoD: blue screen of death (i never said bhosadi ) appears. i ignore it and click escape and continues.
mains power restored after about ten minutes and i bash on regardless.

hapenings : yesterday's
20100709: - i came to know from the nib that my adsl connection has been configured (that was done way back on 20100706!) and all that is to be done was for the local exchange to give the finishing touches.
i telephoned the set up here but no one was attending. so i made a trip to their office and they graciously gave me the password and user name - lucky me!

and past midnight i got on to the net for the first time from my present home telephone, from this very machine i am using right now - the other with win xp is in shambles but this thing can be got ready in a jiffy with some innovative techniques that i have concocted - the trick is to back up the operating system with all the software loaded and even the net connection made from a minimal win xp on another partition and whenever you require it to reinstall it on the cdrive say from d drive. i have a copy of such a thing done in 2007 and it takes just seven minutes to get the whole thing configured. how about that? i am versan with win 98 back up but not so familiar with the xp back up and even if i succeed in backing it up there could be a problem with the authentication and it might not work.
Coming back to what happened, i got connected in a jiffy and i tried google reader first - it is a long time since i read any sensible periodical. clicked down load on a number of bbc podcasts and as the download was going on i started with time magazine.
looked up something about sarrah - i am a big admirer of the barracuda - and then turned to the time interview of friend paul the psychic ( birds of the same feather . . . . ) octopus and i was planning to watch the video on him when i realised that the net connection has been cut off.
i tried dialing again and the response was that the computer i was dialing was not responding. the adsl light was on and it was not a line problem.
Well, the actual reason i found out was that the lan card had disappeared ! the system properties gave no indication whatsoever that such a thing ever existed on this puter. but i could see the card (hallucination! - insanity) in the very slot where it was when i logged on to the net!
there was not much point shifting it to another pci slot and trying and all - that is what past experience had taught me. so i tried a trick. this BSNL adsl modem allows one to access the net through the usb as well. so i installed the usb part of the modem . gotcha! i got connected.
it did not last long. very soon every thing on the screen got pasted and neither the mouse nor the kb will do any work.
Way out : - switch off the power supply and reboot and again connect.
and after i did that over and above the adsl part the lan card is also there in the hardware profile - there is not much point fiddling with it ?
i had an appointment for the morning at 1000 hrs and what with a full tummy and the two small bagpipers, i was feeling sleepy and had perforce to hit the bed by about 0300am - that is why i mostly keep my puter in GMT for the hours when given in gmt are rather sane ones for example 0300 ist becomes 2130 GMT a sober hour to go to bed . you are still on the previous day till then and the new day dawns after you had your full quota of eight hours of bliss!

how can such things happen at all ? !
well, the “intelligentsia” who knows every thing about everything as always have a ready explanation;
nothing of what i mentioned ever happened in the real world.
